Shopify Development and Custom Theme Builds

Shopify development is the work of building a store’s theme and storefront in code rather than configuring a purchased template until it almost fits. It covers custom Liquid templates for products, collections, and landing pages, the cart and checkout experience Shopify lets you control, app integrations, and migrations from platforms like WooCommerce or Squarespace. You keep everything Shopify handles — payments, inventory, orders, PCI compliance — and replace only the storefront your customers actually see.

Fit

Who this is for

Brands selling on a theme that no longer fits

You bought a marketplace theme, paid for four apps to patch its gaps, and now the store looks like every competitor while being slower than all of them.

Stores with merchandising a template cannot express

Bundles, variant-specific imagery, size guides, made-to-order lead times, or collections that need to be curated by hand rather than sorted by an automatic rule.

Merchants migrating onto Shopify

You are moving off WooCommerce, BigCommerce, or a custom cart, and you need products, customers, and URLs to arrive intact rather than as a spreadsheet nobody trusts.

Local retailers going properly online

A Kalamazoo shop with real inventory and repeat customers, where the online store has to reflect what is actually in stock and support local pickup alongside shipping.

Why it matters

Problems this solves

  • Your product pages take several seconds to load on a phone because five apps each inject their own scripts into every page of the store.
  • The theme cannot show your products the way you sell them, so variants, bundles, or made-to-order options are explained in a paragraph of body copy instead of the buying interface.
  • Customers add to cart and abandon at checkout, and nothing in your current setup tells you which step lost them.
  • Editing a collection page means touching theme code you are afraid to break, so nobody merchandises anything after launch.
  • Every theme update threatens the customizations a previous developer made directly in the files, with no record of what was changed or why.
  • You are paying monthly for apps that duplicate each other, and removing any of them leaves broken markup behind in the theme.

Deliverables

What you get

  • A custom Shopify theme written in Liquid, in a Git repository you own, with commit history rather than edits made straight into the live store.
  • Product, collection, cart, search, blog, and account templates designed and built for your catalog instead of adapted from a demo store.
  • Theme sections and settings your team can rearrange in the Shopify editor, so landing pages and homepage merchandising do not require a developer.
  • A cart and checkout experience configured as far as your Shopify plan allows, including cart drawer behavior, shipping messaging, and checkout branding.
  • App integrations installed deliberately — reviews, subscriptions, email, loyalty, shipping — with unused apps removed and their leftover code cleaned out of the theme.
  • Speed work as part of the build: responsive images, lazy loading below the fold, deferred third-party scripts, and a font strategy that does not block the first render.
  • Product data, customers, and URL redirects migrated from your previous platform, with old product links pointed at their new equivalents.
  • Structured data for products, including price and availability, so listings can appear correctly in search results and shopping surfaces.

Process

How the work runs

STEP 01

Audit the catalog and the current store

We go through your products, variants, and collections, the apps you actually rely on, and how orders are fulfilled. That determines which templates the theme needs and what has to be migrated or rebuilt.

STEP 02

Design the buying path

Homepage, collection, product, and cart are designed as a sequence rather than four separate screens, because the questions a customer asks on a product page decide whether the cart is ever opened.

STEP 03

Build the theme in a development store

The theme is written in Liquid against a development store loaded with your real products, so you review actual merchandising with real photography and pricing rather than placeholder items.

STEP 04

Migrate, test, and publish

Products and customers move over, redirects are mapped, and test orders run through payment, shipping, and confirmation emails end to end. Then the theme is published and your team is walked through editing it.

Timeline

Most custom Shopify theme builds run roughly five to nine weeks from kickoff to launch, and stores migrating from another platform typically take longer because the data has to be cleaned before it moves. Catalog size matters less than catalog complexity — two thousand simple products are usually easier than two hundred with bundles and conditional options. Product photography and copy are the two things that most often set the real launch date.

Pricing

Theme builds are quoted as a fixed project price once we have seen your catalog and your current store, so you approve the number before work starts. The estimate is driven by how many distinct templates the design calls for, how complex your variants and merchandising rules are, and how much data has to be migrated. Shopify’s own subscription and any apps you choose to keep are billed by them directly, not marked up through us.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why build a custom theme instead of buying one from the Shopify store?
A marketplace theme is built to satisfy thousands of stores, so it ships with settings and code for features you will never use, and it stops exactly where your merchandising gets interesting. A custom theme contains only your templates and your logic. In practice that shows up first as page speed and then as the ability to sell things the way you actually sell them.
Can I still edit the store myself after launch?
Yes, and that is a design goal rather than an afterthought. The theme is built as configurable sections, so your team rearranges the homepage, swaps banners, and builds landing pages inside the normal Shopify editor. Products, collections, pricing, and inventory work exactly as Shopify does out of the box — nothing about the admin becomes unfamiliar.
How much of the checkout can actually be customized?
Shopify controls checkout itself for security and compliance reasons, so it cannot be rebuilt from scratch. What can be shaped is everything leading into it plus the branding and extension points Shopify exposes: cart drawer behavior, shipping and threshold messaging, upsells, logo and color treatment, and post-purchase steps. Most abandonment is won or lost before checkout anyway.
Can you move my store from WooCommerce or another platform?
Yes. Products, variants, images, customers, and order history are migrated, and old product and category URLs are redirected to their new addresses so existing search rankings and links survive the move. The data gets reviewed before it goes live, because migrations are where duplicate variants and missing images tend to surface.
Will removing apps break anything?
Not if they come out properly. Many Shopify apps leave code inside the theme when uninstalled, which is a common reason stores stay slow after cleanup. During the build we identify which apps are genuinely earning their monthly cost, keep those, and strip the abandoned snippets the rest left behind.
Do you only work with Shopify stores in Kalamazoo?
No. The studio is based in Kalamazoo and it is useful to be nearby for stores across Southwest Michigan that want product photography or fulfillment discussed in person. Ecommerce work is national by nature though, and development stores, preview links, and shared repositories make distance irrelevant to the build itself.
