Starting point

The challenge

The Slick Stevie sells apparel with a clear point of view, and a stock theme is the thing most likely to flatten it. Marketplace themes are built to fit any brand, which is another way of saying they carry none. The store had to look like the label it was selling, and it had to do that without putting anything between a product page and a finished order.

What we set out to do

Goals

  • Build the brand’s visual identity into the storefront itself, rather than leaving it to the product photography to carry alone
  • Keep the path from product page to completed order short, especially at phone width
  • Answer sizing, fit and shipping questions on the page, before they turn into support messages or returns
  • Hand over a store the owner can run — new products, new collections, new drops — without a developer in the loop
  • Keep load times honest despite large apparel imagery, so the design does not quietly cost the sale

Strategy

Approach

A custom theme rather than a configured one. The brand’s type, spacing, colour and motion were built directly into the theme, while Shopify’s own commerce objects — products, variants, cart, checkout — were left intact underneath. Everything a customer sees on the way to checkout is bespoke; checkout itself stays on Shopify’s hardened, PCI-compliant flow. Sections are editable in the admin, so the store changes with each drop without touching code.

Design decisions

  • Product imagery is given real width instead of being boxed into a uniform grid card. On an apparel store the photograph is the product page, and shrinking it to fit a template works against the sale.
  • Type and spacing carry the brand rather than decoration. The layout stays quiet so the clothing is the loudest thing on the screen.
  • The cart is a slide-out drawer, not a separate page. Adding a second item never costs the visitor the page they were browsing.
  • Size, fit and shipping detail sits on the product page rather than behind a link. A question left unanswered at that moment becomes an abandoned cart or a return.
  • Motion is used on entry and hover to give the store its finish, and kept away from the cart and checkout steps, where predictability matters more than polish.

Features

What we built

  • A custom Shopify theme built to the brand, rather than a marketplace theme reskinned with brand colours
  • Product pages with variant selection, multiple image views, and sizing and fit detail in-page
  • Slide-out cart with quantity editing and a running total, so the cart is reviewable without leaving the current page
  • Native Shopify checkout, left unmodified, so payments, taxes, discount codes and fraud protection stay on Shopify’s own infrastructure
  • Collection pages the owner can build, reorder and feature from the Shopify admin as new drops go live
  • Editable theme sections — hero, featured products, brand story, promotional banners — arranged without code
  • Mobile-first layouts, with browsing, variant selection and the route to checkout designed at phone width first
  • Responsive image handling and lazy loading tuned for large apparel photography, so visual weight does not become load time

Where it landed

Outcome

The Slick Stevie runs on a storefront that looks like the brand and behaves like a store. Products, collections and campaign sections are managed from the Shopify admin, so a new drop is a content update rather than a development request. The parts that handle money were never rebuilt — checkout stays on Shopify’s own flow.

Our Shopify store looks incredible and actually converts. Element Web Co nailed the brand, the UX, and the details. Our customers notice the difference every time.
